My intention with this blog is to explore, explain, and extricate, focusing on energy, mainly consumption, especially in residential buildings. I’m Allison A. Bailes III, a recovering academic with a PhD in physics and dirt under my fingernails. I’ve built a high performance home, run a home performance contracting business, managed a nationally recognized green building program, and taught over 200 people who have taken the home energy rater class at Southface Energy Institute since 2008.
I’ll be exploring common misconceptions about homes (such as the belief that you shouldn’t build a house too tight), new products and techniques to make buildings better, and broader energy issues (like the peaking of global oil production). As well, I’ll help you understand the principles of building science, in layman’s terms, and how to apply them to your home.
My ultimate goal here, though, is to help extricate ourselves from this mess we find ourselves in. (That’s why I named my company Energy Vanguard.) Much of it comes down to energy consumption, so I’ll show you ways to cut down on waste while living as comfortably — no, more comfortably — than you thought was possible.
